The month of March comes in like a lion. That is we hope when it comes to big hair anyway!!! This lucky month is dedicated to fresh beauty, the beginning of a new season and time to pull out all the colors spring has to offer. Gary Evens is an expert when it comes to starting a new trend, looking fashionable, and hanging out with the “in” crowd. We caught up with him to hear what his predictions are for a giant spring forward!!
ALS: How long have you been a NYC hairdresser?
GE: 34 years and counting, I’ve always worked on Park, 5th, and Madison Ave.
ALS: Name some of the amazing people you have worked with in your career?
GE: I’ve have worked with Joey Mills ,Reggie Wells , Pat Cleavland , Carol Alt , Mary Wilson and Nancy Feldman just to name a few.
ALS: What is your signature haircut?
GE: The classic bob with or with out very heavy bangs.
ALS: What is the future of the hair industry?
GE: I think the future will be about women going back to the salon. No more at home dyes or chemicals, I think letting the hairdresser do the work so hair can be super healthy and effortless.
ALS: Who are you listening to as far as music these days?
GE: I just saw Nicki Minaj perform at the All Stars Week in Orlando, she is fantastic, I love her music, and she’s a great talent.
ALS: What was the last film you saw?
GE: Dangerous Methods, great film!
AL: Where besides NYC would you like to live?
GE: Hollywood. If there was an AnthonyLeonard Salon there I would be there already.
ALS: Who is your pick for ultimate beauty?
GE: I have so many, but the one that stands out the most for me is Lina Horne.
ALS: Who is your favorite fashion designer of all time?
GE: Thierry Mugler…… Fabulous!
ALS: What is your favorite ALS retail product?

Mercedes Benz Fashion week is always filled with fabulous people. These Fall RTW 2012 collections were more about the who’s who in the front row. One of our all time favorites , Maria Sharapova , knows how to make an entrance and cause a frenzy on the court, but the real commotion starts when she is spotted at all the hottest shows! Celebrity make up artist and friend of the AnthonyLeonard Salon , Andie Markoe -Byrne, teamed up with Leonard Zagami, Creative Director of ALS, to complete Maria ’s looks for the shows. Read on as Leonard explains the 3 looks he gave the grand slammer for this very fashionable NYC Week!
Marc Jacobs:
Maria , seen here with famed photographer Patrick Demarchelier and his wife Mia , had a slightly pinned back side part . “I used Super Shine Cream by Oribe to get a sleek look with out it being too overdone” says Zagami. ” I also used a Kent Brush ( for fine hair) to help smooth down fly-aways”. Maria usually parts her hair in the middle so this was a great change for her!
Vera Wang:
Maria is pictured here sitting next to Vogue Editor in Chief Anna Wintour . “I met Maria early in the morning, and washed and treated her hair with Oribe Shampoo and Masque for Beautiful Color. After a simple blow out her hair felt so great and ultra clean I didn’t need anything else , I wanted her highlights to pop since she had gotten them done the day before by my partner Anthony Palermo at my salon!
Oscar de la Renta:
Backstage with the designer himself , Maria wanted a more glamorous look by wearing a boudreaux colored hat. ” This is tricky ” explains Zagami . ” Hats can flatten hair, and if she decided to take it off , I want her hair to still look full and polished. For this I used Oribe Volumista section by section and used a 1- 1/2 inch curling iron and finished with Oribe Superfine Hairspray to achieve an evening wave without it looking to beachy or frizzy “.

The month of February may be one of the coldest, but at ALS we predict rising temperatures. Even if its a short month, our Artist of the Month , Josh Farrington, is known for his long sexy layers and red carpet styles. He’s the perfect antidote for hair that lacks TLC and we guarantee Cupid’s arrow will strike you with one swipe of his scissors!!
Q-1 How long have you been a NYC hairdresser?
JF-I’ve been a hairstylist in NYC for 8 years.
Q-2 What is your specialty when it comes to hair?
JF-My specialty would probably be attention to detail. Detailed adjustments to haircuts make all the difference .
Q-3 What are some of your predictions for the future in the beauty industry?
JF- Haircuts are so much more personalized than 10 years ago and I expect it only to continue. Geometrical haircuts with strong lines will have their turn again soon as clothing gets more futuristic each year.
Q-4 Give us a great tip for a bad hair day?
JF- Teased top knot takes 3 minutes. It’s chic, easily works with the natural texture of the hair, and can hide bad hair color temporarily!
Q-5 Who is your favorite style icon of all time?
JF-Linda Evangelista- timeless beauty, with just the right amount of edge.
Q-6 What music are you listening to on your I-pod these days ?
JF- Electronica dj Wolfgang Gartner is the man right now.
Q-7 Where besides NYC would you want to live?
JF- Melbourne, Australia- I’ve never been but the city has always peaked my interest . In my head it’s the perfect place.
Q-8 What’s the last film you saw?
JF- I haven’t seen it but would love to see the silent film “The Artist”.
Q-9 Who is your favorite fashion designer?
JF- Jean Paul Gautier is my all time favorite designer. Famous as he is, I feel he is still underrated
Q-10 What is your favorite ALS retail product?
JF- Moroccanoil Hair Spray has the right kind of hold without stiffness.

Q-1: What is your specialty at the ALS?
JW:- As a colorist my specialty is sexy,beautiful,timeless, classic, color. I stay abreast of the times but I don’t follow the trends.
Q-2 : How long have you lived in NYC?
JW: 15 years and counting.
Q-3: What do you see in the future for beauty/hair color industry?
JW: Getting back to anything natural. I feel the hair color industry is always producing more gentle , less harsh and conditioning products.
Q-4 : What sets you apart from other colorists ?
JW: My ability to make people feel comfortable and have my clients understand what the end result will be. I am also a very good listener.
Q-5 : Who is your pick for the ultimate beauty?
JW: I love Charlize Theron. Besides being gorgeous she is an amazing actress. I love the Dior campaign.
Q-6: What is your favorite music on your I-Pod at the moment?
JW: I love Mariah Carey. I’m really in to her music, I have all of her albums and I am crazy about her dance remixes.
Q-7 : Where besides NYC would you want to live?
JW: Paris! It’s very sexy and there is so much art to be inspired by. I would also love to do what I do best there…. bring my highlights to the city of light!
Q-8: What was the last film you saw?
JW: The Skin I Live In by Pedro Almodovar . It’s a great film.
Q-9: Who in the world of fashion designers inspires you?
JW: Tom Ford . I love everything he does, he’s super high fashion and I always loved what he did when he was designing for Gucci
